Chapter Eight
More interested in Ava than getting his new house in order, Lucas woke early, went for a run then came back to get dressed for their date.
On the way to pick her up, he thought about her hot little body, and everything that came with the package. There was no denying he wanted sex with her again, but not at the risk of losing a chance at a future relationship.
She answered the door wearing a colorful summer dress with tiny shoulder straps. She had her hair back and looked beautiful. A smile lit up her face, and she seemed genuinely happy to see him. He took her hand as he walked her to the car, opening her door before going around to the driverâs side.
The restaurant was busy because their food was known throughout the area, but he and Ava managed to get a seat and service without much of a wait.
The buzz of the restaurant had them both leaning forward to be heard above the noise. âThis place is very nice.â She took a bite of salad before putting her fork down. âIt seems a little strange to be sitting across from each other.â Her face reddened. âI meanâ¦after the other night.â
He didnât want her to feel tense about what had happened. âFeels perfect to me.â
She tilted her head. âIn what way?â
He took a sip of coffee. âI havenât forgotten anything that transpired between us that night. But, I donât want it to define our relationship.â He looked across the table at her warm, brandy colored eyes. âBesides, itâs too uncomfortable for you.â
âI wouldnât say it was traumatic, but I wish I hadnât done it.â Before he could sound a rebuttal, she raised her hand. âI donât mean I didnât enjoy myself because I did.â
âAre you in love with Brian?â He felt he had to get that nagging suspicion put to rest.
She toyed with her food then shook her head. Eyes downcast, she said, âI expected Brian to turn me away. I wouldâve been pleased if he had.â She glanced up and their eyes clashed. âI never loved Brian. I think I was just desperate.â
âI canât imagine a woman as beautiful as you worried about catching a man.â
She chuckled. âOh, I caught a few. Unfortunately, I always end up throwing them back.â
âNo luck in the love department?â
âAs pathetic as it sounds, Iâve managed to date some of the worst guys on the planet.â
He liked the way they sparred back and forth with such ease. Heâd never been so relaxed in the company of a woman.
